For Deudare, Julia Wager has created a series of monochromatic botanical drawings exploring the relationship between natural forms and the body.
Leaves, petals, stems and tendrils reveal a quiet sensuality: the suggestion of skin, the tension of a curve, the delicacy of a surface.
Her galerie-atelier is in Issigeac, Dordogne. Here, we share her perspective on the work and a glimpse of the place behind it.

On the work
The intimacy of looking.
These drawings explore the sensuality inherent in the natural forms of plants. Through close observation, the veins of a leaf, the folds of a petal and the bend of a stem become intimate subjects.
The intricate veining becomes almost anatomical, recalling the delicate structures of the human body. Markings, textures and fine lines suggest a relationship between botanical surfaces and skin. Without depicting the body directly, the plants begin to carry a bodily presence, inviting associations with touch, vulnerability and desire.
Working in monochrome draws the eye towards line, shadow and texture. Fine marks accumulate slowly, creating an impression of softness, depth and movement.
Botanical drawing becomes an exploration of the sensuous language of nature — its delicacy, vitality and the beauty revealed through the intimate act of looking.
